The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) is a screening exam conducted by NBE for medical graduates who have completed their education outside India and wish to practice medicine in the country. The FMGE result 2024 for the December session has been declared and candidates who have successfully cleared the FMGE 2024 exam are wondering what next? This article provides a detailed guide on the steps that need to be taken after passing the FMGE exam.

What to do after clearing FMGE exam 2024?

Candidates who have successfully cleared the FMGE exam need to pursue an internship of one year from any medical college in India. The steps that need to be completed are as follows -

  • Obtain FMGE pass certificate

  • Temporary medical registration with NMC or State Medical Council

  • No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Directorate of Medical Education

  • Submission of documents and fees at the respective institutes for Internship

  • Complete one-year internship

How to apply for internship after FMGE? - Step-by-step guide

Once candidates have received their FMGE passing certificate, they are required to follow the below steps.

Step 1 - Temporary registration with the MCI

Candidates after obtaining their passing certificate from NBE need to apply to the Medical Council of India for temporary registration. Once the application is processed, students are given a tracking number sheet by the MCI. Using this tracking number students can track the status of their application. Candidates have to download the provisional registration form of the state medical council where they want to apply and submit the following documents.

  • Xerox copy of FMGE scorecard attested by a Gazetted officer

  • Provisional MBBS pass certificate and mark sheet issued by the university from where candidates have completed MBBS

  • Xerox copy of tracking number sheet received from MCI

  • A demand draft in favour of the State Medical Council

  • An affidavit of Rs.10 non-judicial stamp paper claiming that the candidate has qualified for the FMGE exam and has received the tracking number from the MCI

Step 2 - Receiving NOC from the Directorate of Medical Education (DME)

In the next step, students need to receive an NOC from the DME. Candidates need to write a letter to DME and request to issue a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to do their internship at their preferred hospital. Candidates need to mention their name and the college/ university from where they have secured an MBBS degree. All the Xerox copies of the documents listed above should be attached with the acknowledgement letter received from the State Medical Council and should be submitted at the office of DME. It usually takes a week to receive the NOC.

Step 3 - NOC from the hospital

Once the DME issues the NOC, candidates should go to the concerned hospital and submit a request letter for an NOC from the hospital. To do so, candidates need to submit the Xerox copies of all the documents and the acknowledgment letter containing the seal of the State Medical Council and Xerox copy of the NOC obtained from the DME office. Once the NOC is received from the hospital, candidates should take Xerox copies of it and get them attested.

Step 4 - NOC from the University/ College

In the next step, candidates need to take a demand draft in favour of the concerned college and request the principal for an NOC to do internship in the concerned hospital. Students need to submit their academic certificates, Xerox copies of the State Medical Council acknowledgement, NOC of DME, and NOC of the concerned hospital.

Step 5 - Final order from DME

Students then need to go to the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) office and write a letter requestiong to issue the final order to join the concerned hospital. Students have to take a Demand Draft in favour of the DME and submit it along with their academic reports, Xerox copies of State Medical Council acknowledgement, NOCs of DME, hospital, and University. The final order is generally available within 3-4 days. Candidates are also required to submit an affidavit stating that they will not demand any stipend during their internship period.

Step 6 - Internship posting schedule from The Supritendant

After receiving the final order from the DME, candidates need to take 3 Demand drafts and write a request letter to The Supritendant asking to issue the internship posting schedule. These 3 DD needs to be submitted along with the final order of DME, all the NOCs, tracking number, Xerox copy of FMGE pass certificate, and academic transcript. Upon successful completion, candidates will be allowed to do a one-year internship at the NMC recognised hospital
